Physicals Q & A

What are physicals?

Physicals are preventive exams that ensure your body is functioning well. These exams also allow the Pavilion Family Medicine providers to identify potential health complications in the earliest stages.

Early intervention of diseases like hypertension (high blood pressure) and diabetes ensures you get the treatment you need before the condition worsens.

Pavilion Family Medicine also offers specialized physicals that meet the requirements of schools, sports organizations, and the Department of Transportation (DOT). Specialized physicals ensure you’re healthy enough to participate in physical activities and job responsibilities.

When should I schedule physicals?

You should schedule physicals for you and your family members at Pavilion Family Medicine once a year as part of your preventive health care plan, even if you’re feeling well and have no health concerns.

School-aged children should have a comprehensive physical before the new school year starts and prior to participating in a sport. If you’re starting a new job or working with the DOT, you will also need to schedule a physical in advance of your start date.

Call the office several weeks before any registration deadlines to ensure the Pavilion Family Medicine providers have enough time to schedule and complete your physical and any required paperwork.

What happens during physicals?

During your physical, the Pavilion Family Medicine providers review your personal and family medical histories and discuss your existing health. They also ask questions about your mental and emotional health, lifestyle, and diet.

As part of your physical exam, the providers evaluate many aspects of your physical health, including:

  • Height
  • Weight
  • Body temperature
  • Blood pressure
  • Joint flexibility
  • Muscle strength
  • Skin health

The providers may also order blood work to check your blood sugar and cholesterol levels and other screenings to identify health issues in the earliest stages. They can also update your immunizations against contagious diseases like mumps, measles, and the seasonal flu.

If you or your family are having a specialized physical, the providers perform additional health evaluations to confirm you’re healthy enough to work or play sports. They also ensure that existing medical conditions are well-controlled and won’t interfere with your safety at work, school, or sports.
